Afternoon Head-On Crash in Hughson Kills Sonora Man
HUGHSON, CA (June 27, 2021) – Roy Gillespie was killed in a head-on accident Wednesday afternoon in Hughson.
The accident happened around 2:25 p.m. on June 23, on Geer Road near Hatch Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 33-year-old victim from Sonora was driving a 2013 Nissan sedan northbound on Geer Road. At the same time, 61-year-old Vidal Calderon of Delhi was driving a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck southbound.
For unknown reasons, Calderon allowed the pickup truck to drift out of his lane and to the right, where it struck a raised asphalt curb parallel to the road. The Chevrolet then veered back onto the road and into the northbound lane, where it struck the Nissan head-on.
The Nissan left the east road edge before coming to a rest, while the Chevrolet overturned onto its right side and came to a stop across the road.
Gillespie sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Meanwhile, paramedics took Calderon to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries.
An investigation showed alcohol was not a factor in the crash and both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
Geer Road was closed between Hatch and Jantzen roads while investigators worked on the scene.
We would like to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the Roy Gillespie.
