Driver Trying to Flee from DUI Inspection Dies after Crash with Another Car in San Jacinto
SAN JACINTO, CA (June 23, 2024) – Antonio Cervantes died in a two-vehicle accident in San Jacinto Friday evening on June 21.
The fatal accident happened around 10:11 p.m. at the intersection of San Jacinto Avenue and Esplanade Avenue. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Cervantes had tried to escape the checkpoint where drivers were being screened for intoxication on San Jacinto Avenue, just north of Midway Street about a half-mile away.
While trying to flee from officers, Cervantes collided into another car, causing one of the vehicles to overturn.
As a result of the crash, Cervantes suffered significant injuries and died at Riverside University Health System Medical Center. He was a 36-year-old Hemet resident.
The other driver suffered serious injuries, but was expected to survive.
Both drivers were sole occupants of their vehicles.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to contact deputy Post at 951-654-2702.
