27-Year-Old Man Dies after Struck by Bakersfield Police Patrol Vehicle on South Union Avenue
BAKERSFIELD, CA (June 21, 2024) – Brandon Elliott Gabriel Flores was struck and killed by a patrol vehicle in Bakersfield early Monday morning on June 17.
The fatal crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Union Avenue. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, a two-officer BPD vehicle was responding to a call for service in the downtown area.
As they were traveling northbound in the 1500 block of South Union Avenue, their vehicle struck Flores, who was walking to his father’s apartment at that time.
The impact caused Flores severe injuries. Responding paramedics tried saving him, but he died at the scene. He was a 27-year-old Bakersfield resident, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
The department identified the officers involved in the crash as Officer Julian Garcia and Officer Zachary Ward.
BPD said both officers have been with the department for about two years and remain on administrative leave.
Loved ones created a GoFundMe page for Flores’ funeral expenses.
An investigation into this fatality is ongoing.
