Valerie Martinez, 58, Dies after Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in Hayward
HAYWARD, CA (February 13, 2021) – A woman died in a hit-and-run accident Saturday evening in Hayward.
Around 8:00 p.m., the woman was walking south on Huntwood Avenue near Zephyr Avenue when a vehicle’s driver saw her, slowed down and flashed high beams at her.
Moments later, a light-colored 2005 Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle drove past the slowed vehicle and struck the woman. After striking her, the Ford fled toward Whipple Road, leaving behind a front license plate holder and grille debris.
First responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim Tuesday night as 58-year-old Valerie Martinez, 58 of Fremont.
Police said the Ford will have front-end damage and possible windshield damage. They released an image Tuesday taken from surveillance-camera video that captured it leaving the area.
Anyone with information should call Hayward police’s traffic bureau at 510-293-7099.
We would like to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim.
