Convoy Pileup on 5 Freeway near Camp Pendleton Kills Navy Seabee and Injures 4 Others

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA (March 3, 2021) – A 26-year-old serviceman died Tuesday in a convoy pileup on 5 Freeway in San Diego County.

The pileup happened shortly before 7:00 a.m. on March 2.

The sailors were heading southbound on the freeway when at least one of the five vehicles suddenly slowed for unknown reasons. It caused the others to begin colliding with each other, according to the California Highway Patrol.

As a result, one of the drivers died at the scene, CHP officials said. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Paramedics took four other sailors to hospitals with minor to serious injuries. The patients were three men and two women, all in their 20s.

CHP officials said the sailors were members of Ventura County-based Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5.

The CHP and naval authorities were investigating the accident.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased victim.
