Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on Del Mar Heights Road in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (April 11, 2021) – A pedestrian died Friday afternoon in a hit-and-run on a Del Mar Heights Road in San Diego.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident happened around 2:15 p.m. on April 9, near the southern end of Crest Canyon Park.
The male pedestrian was crossing Del Mar Heights Road mid-block when an eastbound 2004 Saturn Vue struck him, police said. The impact caused him severe injuries.
Responding paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he later died. His name was withheld pending family notification.
After the crash, the driver, later identified as 50-year-old Raul Garcia, allegedly continued driving for a few blocks before pulling over, police said.
Witnesses who had followed him persuaded him to return to the scene of the accident, where he was detained for questioning before being arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.
This case is active and ongoing.
