Winton Cyclist Dies after Crash with Vehicle on Santa Fe Drive in Merced County
MERCED COUNTY, CA (May 20, 2021) – Jesus Rodriguez Martinez was killed in a bicycle accident in Merced County late Thursday evening, May 13.
The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Santa Fe Drive, just west of Chestnut Lane near Winton. Martinez was riding his bike westbound in the middle lane with no rear reflectors when a 1999 Dodge Ram truck, driven by 35-year-old David Cummins of Merced, rear-ended him.
As a result, Martinez was ejected from the bike and died at the scene.
Martinez was a 67-year-old Winton resident, according to the Merced County Coroner’s Office.
Cummins stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. Authorities said it appears that he was unable to avoid the collision and speed does not appear to be a factor.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jesus Martinez.
