Man in Wheelchair Fatally Struck by Drunk Driver Joseph Maez at Stearns Street and Radnor Avenue
LONG BEACH, CA (June 13, 2021) – Joseph Maez was arrested for DUI after fatally striking a man in a wheelchair in Long Beach late Saturday evening, June 12.
The crash happened around 11:19 p.m. at the intersection of Stearns Street and Radnor Avenue. According to the Long Beach Police Department, the 26-year-old suspect from Long Beach was driving a 2016 Honda Civic when he struck the man in the wheelchair who was pushing a shopping cart of his belongings in an unmarked crosswalk.
Responding fire department personnel performed life-saving measures on the pedestrian, but the unidentified victim died at the scene.
Police arrested Maez and booked him for driving under the influence of alcohol and for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Maez’s bail is at $100,000.
