Authorities Identify Pilot and Passenger Killed in Plane Crash near Monterey Regional Airport
MONTEREY, CA (July 16, 2021) – Mary Ellen Carlin and Alice Diane Emig died in a plane crash near Monterey Regional Airport.
Carlin of Pacific Grove was flying the plane Tuesday, July 13. Emig of Rancho Cordova was a passenger on the flight, as well as her small dachshund, Toby.
After taking off from Monterey Regional Airport around 10:41 a.m., the twin-engine Cessna 421 crashed into a home on Monterra Ranch Road, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The crash sparked a fire in the house that spread to nearby bushes, but crews got it under control. The home was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the crash.
The FAA confirmed early Wednesday that the Cessna 421C is owned by M. E. Mullaly Inc. of Pacific Grove. Carlin, a pilot and flight instructor, is the president of that entity. She was planning to fly Emig from Monterey to Mather in the Sacramento area.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department said no bodies have been recovered from the wreckage yet.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Mary Carlin and Alice Emig.
