One Teen Killed, Two Hurt in Police Chase Accident on Gobbi Street and South State Street
UKIAH, CA (August 10, 2021) — A 14-year-old girl died and two other teens were hurt in a pursuit crash on Gobbi Street on Saturday, August 7.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. They said a 15-year-old driver ran a red light at Gobbi Street and South State Street.
A Ukiah police officer attempted to stop the girl who drove a 2017 Volkswagen Beetle. However, she sped off on South State Street.
Police chased the Volkswagen onto Highway 101. The driver then went off the freeway at Rivino Ranch Road. After that, she ran a stop sign and went off the side of the on-ramp that leads back to the freeway.
The vehicle flew through the air, struck a tree, and rolled over.
Medics rushed the driver, a Redwood Valley resident, to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
The 14-year-old girl, who was in the passenger seat without a seat belt, died at the scene. Her identity is not available, but police said she was a Potter Valley resident.
A 13-year-old Ukiah girl in the back seat suffered severe injuries. Paramedics rushed her to Ukiah Valley Medical Center.
Authorities have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident.
