Senior Dies after Struck by Sedan on Avenue 70 in Thermal

 
THERMAL, CA (April 10, 2024) – An 84-year-old man was struck and killed by a car on Avenue 70 in Thermal Tuesday evening on April 9.
 
The fatal crash happened around 9:35 p.m., just west of Pierce Street. According to the California Highway Patrol, the victim was walking on the north shoulder of the road when he stepped into a traffic lane, possibly while intoxicated.
 
A 22-year-old male driver of a 2022 Toyota Camry was heading eastbound on Avenue 70 and suddenly encountered the victim in his path, leaving him no time to stop or swerve.
 
The Toyota struck the senior, causing him significant injuries.
 
The driver, who was unharmed, immediately stopped and called 911.
 
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
 
Authorities only identified the victim as a Thermal resident.

Anyone with information about the death was asked to contact the CHP’s Indio office at 760-772-5300.
