On average, every 4 minutes someone picks up the phone and calls us for help. That kind of trust says everything.

Digital license plates are bringing a modern twist to one of the most traditional parts of your car. Instead of a rear metal plate with stamped numbers and letters, digital plates use electronic displays and wireless connectivity, offering new features for convenience and security.

But like many new technologies, they come with tradeoffs. Here’s what drivers should know in 2025.

What Is a Digital License Plate?

A digital license plate is an electronic display that replaces the traditional metal tag on your car. Pioneered by Sacramento-based company Reviver, these plates use e-ink screens (similar to Kindle displays) and connect to your vehicle via a built-in cellular network.

You can manage your registration, customize the display, and even track your car’s location through a mobile app.

There are two main types:

  • Battery-powered plates (RPLATE): Designed for easy installation, typically on the rear of the vehicle.
  • Hardwired plates (RFLEET): Used on commercial or fleet vehicles and connected to the car’s electrical system.

Important

Digital license plates are only available to mount on the rear of the vehicle.

Where Are They Available?

As of October 2025, digital license plates are legal and available to purchase in California and Arizona, with other states pending approval.

  • Pending legislation: Colorado, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, and Georgia

California was the first state to approve digital plates for all vehicles through AB-984, setting the framework for registration, use, and security standards. Other states are currently evaluating the technology, weighing the potential convenience benefits against privacy and data security concerns.

Benefits of Digital License Plates

Digital plates offer several advantages for drivers and businesses, including:

1. In-App Registration Renewal

Skip the long DMV lines and sticker mailings. Digital plates can update registration automatically through the Reviver app. This makes it easier to stay compliant and reduces the risk of expired registration tickets.

2. Enhanced Security

Some models include GPS tracking, helping locate a stolen vehicle more quickly. Additionally, the plates can send real-time alerts if tampered with, adding an extra layer of protection for your vehicle.

3. Customization

Digital plates allow for personalized display options, including dark or light mode and custom banner messages. Owners can display messages such as “STOLEN” or “EXPIRED” when the car is reported stolen or registration lapses, making communication with law enforcement or the public more efficient.

4. Fleet Management

Businesses with multiple vehicles can track mileage, status, and location in real time. Additionally, business owners like the opportunity to advertise their business for free using the custom banner messages.

5. Sleek, Modern Design

Digital plates have a clean, high-tech appearance that appeals to tech-savvy drivers and early adopters. They also allow for dynamic updates, which can make a vehicle stand out while maintaining compliance with state regulations.

Disadvantages of Digital License Plates

Despite the innovation, digital license plates aren’t for everyone.

1. High Cost

The cost of a new digital license plate is $899, which is significantly higher than a traditional metal plate. In addition to the upfront cost, there are annual service fees, ranging from $35 to $125 per year, depending on the plan. Reviver also offers a premium subscription service for $39.95 per month, which can be canceled at any time. For many drivers, these recurring fees add up over the life of the vehicle, making digital plates a considerable financial investment.

2. Privacy and Tracking Concerns

Digital plates connect to cellular networks and can transmit location and registration data. Critics raise concerns about potential misuse of this data by third parties, advertisers, or hackers. Drivers who value privacy may feel uncomfortable with the idea of a continuously connected license plate.

3. Security Risks

Like any connected device, digital plates are vulnerable to software bugs, technical glitches, or hacking attempts. While manufacturers implement security measures, no system is completely foolproof, and a compromised plate could allow unauthorized access to vehicle information or location tracking.

4. Maintenance and Durability

E-ink screens are designed to last, but extreme weather conditions such as high heat, heavy rain, or snow could damage the display or reduce visibility. Unlike traditional plates, digital plates may require software updates or battery repairs, which can be inconvenient and costly.

Legal and Privacy Considerations

As with digital driver’s licenses, digital license plates collect and transmit certain data, which raises important questions about ownership, privacy, and data security.

  • Data ownership and consent: In California and other participating states, the DMV requires manufacturers to comply with strict data protection standards. However, drivers should carefully review the terms of service to understand who owns the data and how it may be shared with insurers, law enforcement, or third-party vendors.
  • Law enforcement access: Law enforcement agencies may use digital license plate data to identify stolen vehicles or confirm registration. While this can improve public safety, it also increases concerns about real-time surveillance and location tracking without a warrant.
  • Compliance and liability: If a digital plate malfunctions—such as failing to display the correct number or registration status—the driver is still responsible for ensuring compliance with state vehicle laws. Drivers may face fines if their registration is not properly displayed, even if the error stems from a software issue.
  • Consumer protections: California’s DMV and consumer protection agencies continue to evaluate digital plate technology. As the market grows, additional regulations and privacy safeguards are expected to ensure drivers’ data remains secure and use is transparent.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does a digital license plate cost?

A new digital license plate costs $899, plus yearly subscription fees ranging from $35 to $125, depending on the plan. Some premium subscription options, such as Reviver’s $39.95/month service, offer additional features and can be canceled at any time.

What if I am in an accident and my RPLATE gets damaged?

If your digital license plate is damaged in a car accident, the repair or replacement may be covered by your insurance policy or the other party’s insurance, depending on the circumstances. It’s recommended to check with your insurer to confirm coverage for digital license plates, as policies may vary.

Are digital license plates available for motorcycles?

Currently, digital license plates are not available for motorcycles. They are only approved for passenger vehicles and certain commercial or fleet vehicles in participating states.

The Bottom Line

Digital license plates are a glimpse into the future of connected driving, offering convenience, customization, and advanced tracking. However, the high upfront cost and ongoing security concerns mean they may not yet be worth it for every driver.
