3 Motorcyclists Killed, 5 Hurt In Fiery Multi-Car Crash on 5 Freeway in Camp Pendleton
CAMP PENDLETON, CA (June 28, 2024) — Three motorcyclists died in a fiery multi-car accident on the 5 Freeway near Las Pulgas Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal motorcycle collision happened around 3:00 a.m. Thursday. For an unknown reason, a Jeep driver crashed into the left shoulder guard rail, swerving back onto the freeway before stopping. Subsequently, an oncoming Mercedes-Benz van struck the disabled Jeep before a group of four motorcyclists riding in tandem collided with the wreckage.
Shortly after, paramedics responded to the scene and took two people in the Jeep to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment of their life-threatening injuries. Paramedics also took the Mercedes-Benz driver and a passenger in with moderate injuries.
Tragically, three motorcyclists passed away, including two of them who were sailors stationed in the San Diego area.
Officials have not released their identities.
Due to the incident, police closed the southbound lanes and Highway 76 to investigate. They have yet to identify the ultimate cause of the crash. However, any witnesses who can help can call the CHP.
Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of the victims.
