REDDING, CA (Oct 30, 2021) — The Redding police have identified the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash on Shasta Street as Leona McCovey, 33 years old, of Redding.

The crash took place Thursday morning, October 21, at about 8:57 a.m. According to officials, McCovey was driving a pickup truck when she hit an elderly man outside Heavenly Donuts shop. Later, the police identified McCovey through surveillance video. They subsequently arrested her at her home for hit and run causing great bodily harm, and then booked her at Shasta County Jail.

Meanwhile, the elderly man suffered a head injury. The police said he was down in the roadway when they arrived at the scene. Updates about his condition are not available at this time. His name was also unknown and only identified by the police as a 75-year-old man.

Based on reports, the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office will review the case.

Drivers and pedestrians carry equal responsibility for road safety. For drivers, it is important to avoid distractions. Keep an eye out for possible hazards, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Look carefully before turning a corner, especially when near a marked crosswalk. For pedestrians, cross only at designated pedestrian crossings. Wearing dark clothing, especially if you walk a lot, also helps. And as with driving, do not walk while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
