64-Year-Old Homeless Man Dies after Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in Downtown LA
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (July 31, 2024) – Joe Benson was killed in a hit-and-run crash in downtown Los Angeles early Tuesday morning on July 16.
The fatal crash happened around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Fourth Street and Wall Street. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Benson was walking northbound on Wall Street in a marked crosswalk when a gray Nissan Altima traveling eastbound on Fourth Street struck him.
After striking him, the driver of the Altima fled the scene without stopping.
Benson suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 64 years old and was homeless.
At this time, there was no description of the hit-and-run driver or other specific details of the vehicle.
The city is offering a standing award of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identity, arrest, and conviction of the suspect.
