Motorcycle Passenger Dies after Struck by Amtrak Train near Springlake Drive in San Leandro

 
SAN LEANDRO, CA (February 24, 2025) – A motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a train near Springlake Drive and Hesperian Boulevard in San Leandro on Sunday afternoon.
 
The fatal crash happened around 1:55 p.m. on February 23. According to the Alameda County Fire Department, the victim was part of a large group of riders traveling northbound on Hesperian Boulevard when the motorcycle approached the railroad crossing at Springlake Drive.
 
As the group got to the intersection, the railroad arms came down for an oncoming Amtrak train traveling northbound towards Oakland.
 
Several members of the motorcycle group lifted the railroad crossing arms to allow riders through.
 
However, one rider who was carrying a passenger was on the tracks when the approaching Amtrak train hit the motorcycle.
 
As a result, the female passenger of the motorcycle suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
 
The adult male rider suffered critical injuries.
 
Authorities said both the rider and passenger were wearing helmets.
 
At this time, no arrests have been made.
