31-Year-Old La Habra Man Dies after Struck by DUI Driver in House Garage
LA HABRA, CA (October 9, 2024) – Francisco Chay-Garcia was killed in a DUI hit-and-run crash in La Habra Friday evening on October 4.
The fatal crash happened around 10:00 p.m. in the 200 block of West First Avenue. According to police, the victim was standing inside a garage when 23-year-old Rumualdo Ajxup Chay accelerated into the garage with enough force while intoxicated.
The suspect then crashed through the back wall of the garage.
Chay-Garcia was killed in the crash. He was a 31-year-old La Habra resident.
Authorities arrested Chay for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, along with a sentencing enhancement for fleeing the scene.
Chay did not enter a plea Tuesday in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana and his arraignment was rescheduled for October 25 in the North Justice Center in Fullerton. Bail was set at $100,000.
