William Dougherty Arrested in Fatal DUI Multi-Car Accident on Highway 36 [Lassen County, CA]

William Dougherty Charged in Deadly DUI Multi-Car Crash on Highway 36 near Highway 395

 
LASSEN COUNTY, CA (January 17, 2025) — William Dougherty faces DUI charges following a fatal multi-car accident on Highway 36 near Highway 395.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly multi-car accident happened around 7:47 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators learned that 49-year-old Dougherty was likely under the influence while speeding eastbound on Highway 36. Upon approaching stopped cars at the upcoming intersection, he slammed into the back of one vehicle. Subsequently, that car struck another vehicle while Dougherty traveled forward and struck two vehicles traveling slowly on a green light.
 
Tragically, the 47-year-old woman in the first car that was hit died in the accident. The Lassen County Coroner has not identified her. A 10-year-old girl in the same vehicle was airlifted to Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, with major injuries.
 
Following the crash, officers arrested Dougherty, of Sacramento, for gross vehicular manslaughter while under the influence. All others involved suffered minor wounds.
